Actually the truth of the matter is that there’s rather a lot less power being supplied, some pretty electrifying (and not in a good way) news hitting the headlines, and as for chills, well, you might not want to be putting the heating on anytime soon due to ridiculous energy prices; so feeling the chills could be all too familiar when the temperature starts dropping!
But have no fear!
I am here to help you banish those ‘losing control’ woes when it comes to your energy bills!
Look, I know this stuff isn’t particularly exciting, but trust me, unless you want to see your bills sky rocket and instead of putting the heating on and cooking a nice roast dinner, you’re wrapped up under a tin foil blanket eating cold baked beans out of a tin, you might want to listen up for a few minutes!
What I’m not going to bore you with is all the little details about why the energy markets have got their knickers in a twist, because it is what it is and there’s bugger all anything anyone can do to change that fact.
There is, however, a few things you can do right now to protect yourself as much as you can and try and keep as much of your hard earned dosh in the bank as possible.
It’s all very simple, quick and easy, so let’s do it!
Do these regularly, more often than you usually would.
We’re all used to providing meter readings so that our bills aren’t based on guesswork and our bills are accurate. Mostly these are done every month, or maybe just when you remember!
Set a reminder on your phone or Alexa or something to take a note of meter readings once a week.
There a lot of companies hanging in the balance right now, lots have already gone tits up and there’s a huge chance that a lot more are heading the same way in the not too distant future.
Keep these readings for your own records and also input them through your usual methods with your energy supplier.
If the company you’re with goes down the drain this will really help in eliminating any discrepancies with their closing reading for your account and your new suppliers opening reading.
Estimated bills can be wildly inaccurate as the usage from household to household can vary greatly. Pay too little and you will end up with a whacking great debt to clear, pay too much and you are at risk of losing the credit that you’ve built up with your supplier.
Claim your credit.
Most of us pay the same amount each month throughout the year to even out the variations between summer and winter usage of our energy.
It’s that time of year where your winter balance is likely to be starting to accrue.
If you have a credit on your account and you are concerned that your supplier is about to disappear into a puff of smoke, ask for this credit to be paid back to you. Not applied onto your bill, actual money in the bank.
With the strict Ofgem regulations which all energy suppliers are bound to, you should always receive any credit that is owed to you when a company goes bust, however it can take a while. Better to be one step ahead and get your hands on it first!
Have a good look at your bills.
None of us tend to spend much time pouring over our bills, analysing what we’re using and what we’re paying, but it would be a good idea to take more than a cursory glance at yours right now.
You should be able to see what you’re using each month in energy units and in ££.
Is what you’re paying each month in line with what you’re using, not way too much, not way too little.
Are your bills based on estimated figures or your actual meter readings.
Make sure that you are happy with the information and that it’s all up to date.
Call your energy supplier and adjust your payments if needed.

Comparison websites are pretty broken right now when it comes to energy suppliers and to be perfectly honest with you, they’re a total waste of your time and effort, so don’t even bother going there.
Basically, every single energy company right now is quivering in their boots and not putting a great deal out into the public domain.
Most companies have had to increase their prices so much that they aren’t shouting about it anywhere!
This is what you need to know about tariffs right now.
When is all is normal in the world, being on a variable tariff is more expensive than being on a fixed deal, but with the current volatility that is not the case.
Variable ones are unusually cheaper than fixed tariffs at the moment. However you’re better off paying a little more to fix your tariff so you don’t get royally shafted by price hikes.
Whatever tariff you are on, whatever company you are with, if they cease trading you will still receive your gas and electricity supply as usual and you will be allocated a new supplier. You won’t get to choose this so if you have reservations about your current company and don’t want to be dumped onto someone new, then look at changing now.
There have already been casualties and a lot more companies are set to go out of business. The government has said that these companies will not be bailed out and there can be no guarantee that customers with those companies will not see a price increase, in fact it’s more than likely that you will see prices soar.
I’m not saying this to scare you, and I know it’s very ‘adulty’ but even if you’ve never bothered with this stuff before, you need to do it now! Like right now!
